Man’s Best Friend

Last weekend, I flew to Dallas to visit some friends for the weekend.   As my friend was driving us to the airport on Monday, we pulled out of the drive behind his house and into the street.  We made a slow right turn onto a neighborhood street and, from the back seat I heard, “Is that a dog?”  “It’s three dogs!”  I looked up just in time to see three good-sized dogs occupying the driver’s seat, front seat passenger’s seat and back seat of an SUV that was parallel parked along the curb.

Now this sight might not seem so strange in the telling, however it seemed, at the time, to almost go by in slow motion as we passed.  All of us in the car….staring, and all three dogs turning their heads (slowly) to follow our car as we drove by.  Definitely “shifty” looking.

My mind has a tendency to take something and “run with it”…so of course, I immediately began wondering aloud what these “shifty” and “suspicious-looking” characters were doing in my friend’s neighborhood.  Even going so far as to wonder if my friend’s dog, Ellee, had planned to have a little party around the pool with her “hoodlum” friends”, once everyone was out of the house.

Now, I didn’t have time to grab my phone and snap a picture, but I found one that will give some idea as to what the scene was like….

Sure there have been other animals that “drive” cars….

"Toonces The Driving Cat"

However….the look was less happy and more suspicious.  Like this dog….

Definitely up to no good.

It was a funny sight and a great way to cap off a great weekend.   It also got me looking for some of my favorite commercials from earlier this year.

Leaking Prometheus

20th Century Fox has been leaking viral videos that give fans a glimpse into what is to come on June 8th, 2012…when Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is released.

This first video gives a look into Guy Pearce’s character in Prometheus, Peter Weyland.  As any fan of the Alien franchise knows, Weyland Industries is the (evil)  corporation that eventually merged with the Yutani organization, to create Weyland-Yutani…with slogans like “building a better future” and “building better worlds”.

The video is designed to look like a lecture from the popular lecture website TED.COM, (technology, entertainment, design), “Ideas Worth Spreading”, which is a website formed by the non-profit Sapling foundation.  TED’s mission statement is:

We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. So we’re building here a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.

Also, attendees at this year’s WonderCon were given cards to access this glimpse into Michael Fassbender’s character in the movie.  He plays an android named David.

More clues to Prometheus can be found at Prometheus Project, where there are still three locked pieces of information yet to be released.

John Isner Enters Top 10

Congratulations to John Isner for making the ATP top 10 for the first time in his career. In claiming runner up at Indian Wells (BNP Paribas Open) on Sunday, he claims the #10 spot and he becomes the second US man currently in the top ten, joining Mardy Fish #8.

Although Isner lost to Roger Federer in the final on Sunday, he became the world #10 player ….and beat the world #1, Novak Djokovic, on his way to the final!

NEW Prometheus Trailers

A couple of new “official” Prometheus trailers came out this weekend.  The first (being the second official trailer) debuted Saturday afternoon at WonderCon, at the Anaheim Convention Center, with a panel consisting of director Ridley Scott, screenwriter Damon Lindelof and actors Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender.

Damon Lindelof, Ridley Scott, Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender at WonderCon

The new trailer gives more of the storyline than the official trailer that was released two months ago.  The cast includes Theron, Fassbender, Noomi Rapace (the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Guy Pearce.

The second is an IMAX teaser trailer:

During the WonderCon panel discussion, not much of the plot was discussed.  However, during a Livestream discussion with Scott and Lindelof, Lindelof did mention that in story meetings, the plot evolved into something other than an Alien prequel.  Apparently Ridley Scott told Lindelof during these early script conversations that he had already done Alien and wanted to create an original story, while at the same time giving a “tip of the cap” to Alien fans.

In regards to comparisons in the story and the look of the two films, Scott said that he had already been there/done that with the alien story and “grunge” look of the original and wanted to go in a different direction…while still trying to scare the sh*t out of audiences.  It did seem that 20th Century Fox was keeping everyone on a rather short leash with their responses to questions, however Ridley Scott did say, “If we’re lucky maybe they’ll be second part to all of this.  Because the film does leave you with some really nice, big, open questions.”

Kony 2012

There has been many articles written this week about the video Kony 2012 and its creator and his organization, Invisible Children.  Some supporting the “movement” and some questioning the organization and its motivations and even its timing in releasing the 30 minute film this week.

Since this is my post…I’ll just say that shining a light on injustices in this world should be applauded.  Even those people that question the “slick” look of the video and the organization’s fund-raising agree that Joseph Kony has committed atrocious crimes and should be stopped.  Sure, it’s taken years for the organization, Invisible Children, to produce this video that has blown up on YouTube this week…sure, Joseph Kony has not been in Uganda for some time, but that does not negate the fact that these atrocities against children happened.   It’s just that this week…because of this video….more people know about it.

Ultimately, the decision to do (or not do) something about this type of  thing is up to each individual person.

Chris Cornell

As the lead singer for Soundgarden and Audioslave, as well as releasing an album with a group (Temple of the Dog) that would later become Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell has always had a voice that was very distinct.  He’s also recorded songs with other bands as well as having his own solo career.  I was able to see him perform with Soundgarden at Lollapalooza in September 1992, on the soccer field of the University of New Orleans.

The following are examples of, not only his voice, but his ability to understand a great song is always worth singing.

I was never a Whitney Houston person…that’s not to say that I did not appreciate how talented she was.  I just never found myself inclined to purchase a Whitney Houston CD.  Of course, if I was perusing someone else’s CD collection and they had one of her CDs with a particular song that I liked, I wouldn’t hesitate to throw it in the mix as I sat in front of their stereo,  listening to different CDs, playing DJ.

It’s actually really sad that often it isn’t until someone is gone that I find myself thinking about how talented they were in their particular field.  In Whitney Houston’s case, she had a true gift of a voice.  If you stop and think about it, it’s really something amazing…that someone is able to touch millions of people all around the world, with their voice.

Rest In Peace.
